How to Choose a Website Development Company: 10 Questions to Ask

By SAANS Technologies · Published · 6 min read

Short answer

Choose a developer who shows live websites, keeps the domain, hosting and code in your name, gives a written scope with payment milestones, includes basic SEO and mobile testing, and offers support after launch. Treat guaranteed #1 rankings and missing written quotes as warning signs.

Choosing who builds your website is a bigger decision than it looks. A good developer gives you a site that brings enquiries for years. A poor choice can leave you with a slow site, no control over your domain, and a rebuild in a year. These questions help you compare options fairly, whoever you choose.

Questions to ask before you hire

1. Can I see live websites you have built?

Screenshots are easy to fake. Ask for links to live sites, open them on your phone, and check that they load quickly and work properly. If possible, ask one of their clients how the project went.

2. Will the domain, hosting and code be in my name?

This is the most important question. Your domain and hosting accounts should be registered in your name, with your email. If the developer owns them, you depend on them forever.

3. What exactly is included in the price?

Ask for a written scope: number of pages, features, content writing, images, SEO setup, revisions and training. Two quotes are only comparable if they include the same work. Our guide on what decides the cost of a website explains what usually changes the price.

4. Will it work well on mobile phones?

Most of your visitors will be on a phone. Ask how they test on mobile, and check their live sites on your own phone.

5. What SEO is included?

At minimum: unique page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, clean URLs, fast loading and Google Search Console setup. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed first-page ranking. No one can honestly promise that.

6. Can I update the website myself?

If you add products, photos or prices often, ask for an admin panel and a short training session, so you do not need a developer for every small change.

7. How is the project run?

Ask about the timeline, who you will talk to, and how often you will see progress. Seeing the design before development starts saves a lot of rework.

8. How are payments structured?

A common, fair structure is an advance at the start and the remaining payments at clear milestones, such as design approval and launch. Make sure this is written in the quote.

9. What happens after launch?

Websites need updates, fixes and security care. Ask what support is included, how quickly they respond, and what ongoing maintenance costs.

10. How do you handle security and enquiries?

Ask whether the site uses HTTPS, whether forms are protected from spam, and where enquiries go. A good contact form saves every enquiry, not just sends an email that might fail.
